CORUNNA  UNITED  NEWS

 May/June 2012

As Easter people we give thanks to God for his Risen Son, Jesus.  The many times we gather to share in worship, song, and food in this Easter Season gives opportunity to reflect on the core of Christianity.  My prayer as springtime is upon us, is that our fellowship will continue to grow in the love and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, reflecting his love in our families and among the people we encounter.

The new small group ministries in Corunna United Church are active in Book Club, Prayer Shawl Group and Bible Study. We reach to the local community through; our prayer chain, opportunity for fresh food boxes, our support of the snack program at Colonel Cameron Public School, and offer prayer shawls for those in need.

Outreach in the wider church community and globally is supported by the Mission and Service Fund and Corunna United Church’s own project, Med Outreach.  The medical students going on a mission to Tanzania this summer will visit Corunna United Church on May 6.  At that time, they will address the congregation during the worship service sharing their excitements, anxieties, and responsibilities while in Africa. They will accept the gifts of stickers, pens, pencils and black socks collected by our congregation for the children in Tanzania.   As well, they will be presented with a financial gift to help make this study project more meaningful. Gillian Ewing and I will attend London Conference, on May 4, 5, 6, in London, ON. On May 13, during our worship service we will share in the baptism of Scotia Clair Cassel, daughter of Bradley and Amanda Cassel.  We pray Scotia will grow knowing, the love and presence of God.

A Pastoral Care Reflection- An old man had a very sick wife, whom he loved very much. She suffered many years and last week she died.  The man was suffering, and struggling with grief.  He  lived next door to a young family with small children.  The man would spend his days in his yard, sometimes gardening, and often sitting on a swinging bench that he and his wife had shared many times.  On a particular day the man sat so very still, his head in his hands, shedding tears.  The four year old neighbour boy gently crawled up on the swing and nestled in beside him.  They sat for a very long time quietly. When the child returned home, his mother asked what it was, that he said to the neigbour man.  The boy replied, “nothing, I just helped him cry.”

 Blessings

Rev. Janet Uren

May 6, 2012----Medoutreach Sunday will be planned and led by the Medoutreach Committee.

The Medical, Dental, and Nursing students who are going to Tanzania this summer will be joining us for this service.  They will be receiving the many donated items of stickers, pencils, pens, pencil crayons, black socks, and handmade items such as baby blankets, knitted hats, baby quilts, tube socks which will be used in the leprosy colony,

washcloths, soccer balls, teddy bears (some of which have been hand-made) as well as the proceeds from the garage sale which was held on April 28.  We are very grateful to all those who have donated and who have shared their time and talent to make the many hand- made items.

This year, as May 6th is Conference Sunday.   The congregations of 6th Line/Coutright and Brigden United Churches have been invited to join us for this service.  A time of fellowship and lunch will follow with a free will offering to be donated to the students.  This is an excellent time to talk to the students who are eager to meet everyone, as they are so grateful for the support they receive from Corunna United Church.

On behalf of the Medoutreach Committee and myself, THANK YOU and remember “Wear your T-shirt”!

Thank You to the Property Committee:

This committee is responsible for the supervision, maintenance, and improvements of land, building, and contents.  They are responsible for the purchase and installation of new furnishings as directed by the Board of Elders and in consultation with appropriate Committee or other persons or group with a direct interest in a specific matter.   They study and recommend any structural changes that would enable the Church to perform its task better for God in the Community.

The extreme dedication and hard work of this committee shows in the great appearance of the Church.  The Corunna United Church is indeed fortunate to have such a great group of volunteers.   Thanks, Your work is much appreciated.

Outreach Committee:

We have a visiting team and we are happy to visit folks in their own home, retirement home, long term care facility or the hospital in Sarnia or Petrolia.  If you or your family member would like a visit from an Outreach member, please contact the church office at 519-862-1052 and the co-ordinator will contact the Outreach chair person.

Amicitia will be supplying soup and sandwich lunch the last Sunday of April.

Child Nutrition or Snack Program

Corunna United has made a commitment as part of the interchurch council to support the "Child Nutrition Program" (Snack Program) at Colonel Cameron School.   Children there receive very healthy snacks, three mornings a week.  The program is to promote

healthy eating habits and is being very well received by the students.

The committee in charge is working diligently to adhere to the Ministry's stringent guidelines and are being very frugal with donation money which is now coming in through fundraising activites and from service clubs and businesses.  There is a group of volunteers which put in an average of 51 hours collectedly to shop for and package the food into individual snacks for the children.  We are very grateful to these volunteers who unselfishly give of their time for the children.  The Corunna Church Network is hoping to continue with this project in the 2012-2013 school year.
